PROJECT DESCRIPTION

This project's mandate was to visually represent an artist’s album and music by creating a music poster and a vinyl cover and sleeve. This was a two-phase project that was ongoing for two semesters.

OBJECTIVES

The project’s main objective was to accurately represent visually what the musician wanted to convey through their music. The artist I had for this project was Daphne Oram, with her album titled electronic sound patterns. The album was realized to target children and encourage them to be more expressive and theatrical by making movements associated with the multiple sounds they heard throughout the album.

PROCESS

The first step of the process was to brainstorm to be able to present three different concepts which could represent the artist’s album accurately, every concept had three digital renditions of possible options for the poster, and after some feedback, the concept chosen for my project was childhood—inspired by a chess board which represented a well-thought-out game and blobs of paint which contrasted the severe tone of the poster by making it more childlike and accurate to the concept chosen.

The type and title of the album peeked out from the white pieces on the checkered pattern, again tying back into the playfulness of the concept. The poster itself was pretty successful and embodied the concept perfectly.

Then in the next semester, we essentially had to make a rendition of our poster using a different message to work with a vinyl jacket and sleeve, still playing with the type. The vinyl jacket had checkerboard pattern die-cuts through the front, letting the significant type on the sleeve peek out playfully, keeping the personality and concept of the poster.
